Agricultural Urbanism

Interest in sustainable food system issues has been in discussion for decades, but Mark felt it was too narrow in the planning field, focusing almost entirely on agricultural land preservation, organic production, urban agriculture and food security (food banks).

Working with Janine de la Salle, he created a food system consulting team in his company and went to create the concept of Agricultural Urbanism and publish a book on it in 2010.

Agricultural Urbanism focuses on addressing all aspects of the food system in urban planning, including:

agricultural production

food processing

food warehousing & distributions systems

wholesale & retail systems

food services & restaurant systems

food education

food celebration & culture

food security systems

Addressing each of these elements with local prosperity and sustainability in mind, forms the foundation and core elements for a sustainable and prosperous food system strategy for any community.

Mark has since worked with local governments, Health Authorities and developers on interesting projects to enhance their cultural, economic and environmental performance with food systems.
